The Fort St. James District is committed to reducing the risk of wildfire in our community and is taking action on a number of fronts. After completion of a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan, and a Fuel Management Plan, the next phase is fuel reduction.

The first high priority project area is Treatment Unit 1, located behind and east of the hospital.  The work will commence in mid/late March and should wrap up by the end of June. The project may be delayed if there are late, heavy snows, or if hot, dry weather drives fire hazard to extreme, so these dates are approximate.  If that occurs, work would recommence once the risk is reduced.

During the treatment signs will be posted, and trails and footpaths within the treatment area will be closed to ensure the safety of the public. It is very important that our residents respect the signs as the contractor will be cutting down trees. We will do our best to minimize disruption and all trails will be restored after the work is completed.

The treatment has been prescribed by Frontera Forest Solutions. Frontera has extensive background in forest fuels mitigation and community wildfire resiliency planning. The treatment calls for thinning of understory trees, pruning of retained overstory, possible creation of firewood for community use, and some pile burning as weather allows.  This treatment will be done by hand with power tools so there will be some additional noise to contend with, but no heavy machinery.

Information will be kept updated at fortstjames.ca and our Facebook page. The map below shows the wildfire treatment area outlined in light blue.
