General Tax Information

• I Didn't receive my Tax Notice

  • Ownership and mailing information for Tax & Utility Bills are generated through BC Assessment. Please ensure you keep your mailing address up-to-date by visiting BC Assessment's website.
• Late Penalty

  • After July 2, late fees apply to the unpaid taxes of the current year. 
  • A 10% fee will be applied to the remaining amount unpaid as of the end of business on the 2nd day of July.
• Permissive Tax Exemptions

  Permissive tax exemption is available for qualifying, registered non-profit organizations using property for municipal, recreational, religious, cultural, or charitable purposes.

• Tax Deferment

  Tax deferment is a low-interest loan program administered by the Government of BC that helps qualified BC homeowners pay their annual property taxes on their principal residence.

• Tax Sales

  The District is required by the Local Government Act on the last Monday of September to sell at tax sale all properties where taxes have not been paid in three years. The Local Government Act gives the Collector authority to sell a property for the "Upset Price" which equals all outstanding taxes + penalties + interest + 5% tax sale cost + Land Title Office fees. 

  All property sales are "as is" without warrant or guarantee by the District of Fort St. James. For complete information, prospective purchasers should consult the Local Government Act.

• Non-Municipal Taxes

  Only a portion of taxes billed to property owners are for services provided by the District of Fort St. James. The District collects the remaining amount on behalf of other authorities including:

  • The Province of BC
  • BC Assessment
  • The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako
  • Regional 9-1-1 Services
  • Stuart-Nechako Regional Hospital District
  • The Municipal Finance Authority
